College grad with autism needs next step
#1
My 24-year-old just finished a 2-year college program for students with learning differences. He did great academically but now we're stuck on what comes next. He wants independence but needs help with daily living skills and finding a job. We've heard about supported employment and group homes but don't know which programs are actually good. Looking for supported housing programs, day services for people with intellectual disabilities in NY, preferably near Syracuse or Utica. Any personal experiences?

Leaving college can feel surprisingly uncertain, especially when someone is ready for more independence but still needs practical support. A friend’s son was in a similar situation after finishing a transition program near Utica. Their family contacted NY OPWDD, toured several supported-housing options, and asked about job coaching, transportation, cooking, and budgeting not just the building. They also spoke with community mental health and addiction services and found the staff helpful when comparing day services and employment support. Definitely visit in person and ask about staff turnover and individualized goals.
