We skipped beta testing on our launch and I regret it
#1
Sharing a mistake in case it saves someone else the same headache. On our first real launch we were so eager to ship that we went straight from internal testing to opening the product to everyone on our waitlist the same day. It felt bold. It was actually just impatient.

Internally everything worked, because internally we all used the product the "right" way. The moment real users hit it, they did things we never tested. Signed up with edge-case emails, hit the API from setups we did not anticipate, abandoned flows halfway and came back confused. None of it was catastrophic on its own, but the pile-up on launch day meant our first impression to a few hundred people was a buggy one. You do not get that first impression back.

What I understand now is that the internal round we did was alpha, and we simply never did the beta. Alpha is your team stress-testing in a controlled setting. Beta is a limited group of real users finding the things your team is too close to the product to see. I had mentally treated them as the same step. They are not. If you want the clean version of the difference, this piece on alpha vs beta testing spells it out better than I can here.

Next launch we did a two-week closed beta with maybe thirty real users first, and it caught more than our entire internal round did. Curious if others learned this the hard way too, or if you all were smarter than me from the start.
